The weird exclamation featured most famously on 90s show Gladiators when its presenter John Fashanu, or Fash The Bash, would shout it as the show kicked off, as in the below clip. The Urban Dictionary says it is an onomatopoeic term describing the noise of a klaxon, specifically a submarine klaxon. It is also described on the site as ‘a sign of excitement, happiness and an utterance of agreement’.In addition, awooga is a verbal representation of the ridiculous noise made when excited cartoon characters’ eyes jump out of their heads.Calvin Harris even paid tribute to the nonsense word in one of his tracks from 2011.How can we possibly attribute this wonderful word to Calvin Harris or John Fashanu when it materialised on TV for the first time years and years ago?Yes, awooga was born on the sci-fi sitcom Red Dwarf, courtesy of the incomparable Craig Charles.Charles’ lazy oaf of an alter-ego Dave Lister would shout out ‘Awooga!’ during moments of peril, or when a siren was going off.It became one of the character’s many catchphrases – and Charles liked it so much that he began using it in other TV shows. You can hear him shouting awooga when pushing through the metal gates, and when throwing his leather coat into the crowd, at the start of his virtual reality BBC Two game show Cyberzone. He later also used the phrase on the game show he’s much better known for, So how come John Fashanu started using it on Gladiators in the 90s?Well, it turns out that Fashanu himself was once a guest on Cyberzone and subsequently used it on Gladiators, to the great ire of Charles and Red Dwarf fans.A sad and confusing footnote in this story is that Olympian Kriss Akabusi was attributed with saying the word awooga as well, back in the early noughties – presumably because people confused him with Fashanu. The misunderstanding led to Akabusi being the subject of hundreds of X-rated stories online.
