The route is a principal connector between the San Joaquin Valley and the Mojave Desert. The Native American Kitanemuk people used the pass as a trade route …
Due to the steep grade, railway engineers building the track in the 1870's made a loop, where the track makes a full circle to gain altitude. This perticular mountain grade hosts one of railroads engineering landmarks, the Tehachapi Loop, and is one of the busiest single track mainlines in the country. The Tehachapi Loop is part of the Southern Pacific/Santa Fe rail line that goes through the Tehachapi area. The Tehachapi Loop included “S” curves that weaved back and forth up the Tehachapi Creek watershed to ease the grade and overcome the steep incline.
Tehachapi Pass is a mountain pass crossing the Tehachapi Mountains in Kern County, California.Traditionally, the pass marks the northeast end of the Tehachapis and the south end of the Sierra Nevada range.. An interactive map presented at the meeting, not yet available online, shows the potential project going at a 45 degree southeast angle over Highway 58 and Tehachapi Boulevard, past Goodrick Drive (east of Dennison), past E. Valley Boulevard, White Oak Drive, Highline Road, Tehachapi Willow Springs Road and through mountains toward Palmdale. Similar to how the Central Pacific/Transcontinental Railroad (1869) famously connected the U.S.’s east and west, the Tehachapi Pass Railroad Line (TPRL) helped connect California’s north and south, contributing greatly to the early growth of Southern California. Both of the men came out of retirement after working on the Central Pacific Railroad.Today, the Tehachapi Pass Railroad Line continues to be recognized for its engineering ingenuity, and is considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Railroad World.
The Tehachapi Loop is a 0.73-mile (1.17 km) long 'spiral', or helix, on the Union Pacific Railroad line through Tehachapi Pass, of the Tehachapi Mountains in Kern County, south-central California. location of the Tehachapi Cam. The TPRL is one of many surviving railroad lines built by early Chinese American laborers that continue to contribute in modern-day American society. You may wish to switch to the Tehachapi Loop (Google Maps). Since their beginning, the TPRL was celebrated as an engineering marvel. Click to email this to a friend (Opens in new window)
Tehachapi Pass is the third in the growing series of railroad areas that I have visited, and this is another of the famous mountain passes that are located in the southwest USA.
Over the last 25 years I have driven through Tehachapi 3 times, but I have never had the opportunity to do anything. The line connects Bakersfield and the San Joaquin Valley to Mojave in the Mojave Desert.
The Tehachapi Pass Railroad Line was cut through solid and decomposed granite by about 3,000 Chinese laborers using nothing more than picks, shovels, horse drawn carts, and blasting powder.

The railroad’s 50 plus track miles traverses the steep Tehachapi Mountain Range, steadily reaching an elevation of 3,600 feet with the help of the Tehachapi Loop. With an abundance of trains and the extra bonus of BNSF trackage rights, it is no wonder that this sub brings visitors from all over the world to watch the show unfold, mountain railroading at its best. @ 2006-10-23 13:57:50 A Perfect Railroad Sunset - An eastbound manifest, led by UP 7180, crawls to a stop just before tackling the world famous, Tehachapi Pass.
