Every character save the lead is woefully underwritten, a half-hearted combination of cliche and weak imagination.
Goodreads helps you keep track of books you want to read. It also introduces a quite iconic character in the shape of D, an enigmatic and complex character. The book more than made up for that however in an engaging main character, Eldon Chance.

I enjoyed the book and I think stories like this are important so people can keep in mind that bad decisions usually lead to a bad life. Then Chance meets D, a hulking, philosophical ex-soldier who is working in an antiques warehouse in San Francisco’s Mission District.
Clearly, others find them both tedious and irksome.
I think the author has been writing for TV too much lately. That being said, I enjoyed the first 3/4 so much that I'm still giving it four stars, or rather 3.5, rounded up. I don't know if it was just overwritten but the character became unbelievable for me, and the credibility of the story fell completely apart.
