He espoused the value of kinetic energy and spontaneity in painting which became significant artistic values in Philippine art. Most of Joya’s paintings of harmonious colors were inspired by Philippine landscapes, such as green rice paddies and golden fields of harvest.
José Joya was a Filipino painter best known for his Abstract Expressionist works which utilized a variety of techniques, including controlled drips, impasto strokes, and transparent layering. He was president of the Art Association of the Philippines (1962-1965) for three consecutive terms, later became Dean of his alma mater from 1970 to 1978, and served as chairman of the Philippine Delegation to China (1961, 1972). Jose Joya was the UP College of Fine Arts Dean from 1970 to 1980 and he won several awards including Patnubay ng SIning at Kalinangan Award from the City of Manila in 1971.
