Historically the loch has been renowned for it’s Game fishing and remains one of the best places in the country to target Sea Trout, with numerous fish well into double figures taken each year. The fresher and softer the bait, the more roach you will catch – it’s as simple as that. Stillwater roach can be incredibly picky, whereas their river cousins will eat a far wider range of baits with gusto. The immensity of the loch stretches out from our feet to meet a maze of undulating islands, which in turn are dwarfed by the ruggedness of the hills and mountains that dominate the horizon.Loch Lomond is a true angler’s paradise and merely 40 minutes from Stirling and 1.5hrs from Edinburgh. The helicopter feeder has become a mainstay for a great many anglers fishing for species as diverse as specimen roach, tench and carp.
Roach are found in shoals so if you catch one …
Hidden Gems If you are missing bites when fishing a single maggot, try hooking a maggot through the middle instead of the end. Roach in rivers and lakes are almost like two completely different species. Whilst to the north, the view is dramatically dominated by the 3000ft. Initially, casts every 3 minutes or so are required to get a substantial quantity of bait into the swim. Gravel pit and reservoir roach fishing often means fishing with maggots at ranges well beyond floatfishing distance. One rig stands above all others for this type of fishing – the helicopter rig, incorporating a Kamasan Black Cap feeder and a 4ins hooklength, baited with maggots. Alternatively, I often remove the need for a swivel and have the feeder, with a small bead either side, running on 20 – 30cm loop tied along the mainline above the hook link.Once the setup has been finalised and the ground bait mix perfected, it’s time for the hard work to begin. This could be instantly or up to as much as an hour but the key is positivity and to continue casting.
It is very tangle-proof, especially when higher diameter line is used for the hooklength and also an effective bolt rig, meaning that most bites will be very positive. My advice is to use the softest pellets that you can, as the roach will hang on to these for a fraction of a second longer. The Method has dominated fishing for many species, and it has transformed big roach fishing too. Feeder fishing for roach can be so effective once you get a few simple mechanics right. A feeder weighing a minimum of 30g creates a good bolt-effect for better hooking. It is however, the best for those who enjoy catching a lot of fish. In the winter months these fish can be found in huge shoals in certain, slightly deeper areas of the loch, generally in around 30 feet of water. The Method has dominated fishing for many species, and it has transformed big roach fishing too. For river roaching a piece of flake and a feeder filled with liquidised crumb is often my opening gambit. This behaviour, I am sure, explains why bites when hemp fishing can be very fast and difficult to hit. Ask your local tackle shop when they get their maggot deliveries and try to buy yours soon after they arrive. This article was brought to you in association with Improve Your Coarse Fishing Magazine. You can’t get away from the fact that roach love the taste of hemp, though, and so it is a must in all of my roach fishing. Roach, Dace, Perch, Bream and Hybrids can all be taken in good numbers and a big mixed bag of fish is not uncommon; assuming they can be found as locating fish in such a large area of water can be the foremost challenge.
