Tamar squid - TAS - posted in TAS: HELLO I have just moved to tassy and got myself a boat, i was given a squid jig and float as a gift and after reading some of the other messages now understand how to use it, thankyou. hi guys,just after a bit of info on the river.not after any ones spots or anything but just what type of fish can you catch.have looked at most posts but the names used are all foreign to me and until i can get a chart of the area i have no idea where they are.the main question is can you catch fish and squid in the river or do you need to go outside.i need to buy a boat when we get there so if i have to go outside the boet would have to be capable of that. Low Head area has been fishing well. Sweep and Leather Jackets favour the waters adjacent to Break waters and head lands. It should be available from the PLA, tackle stores or try Tamar Marine. Anglers fishing from the shore would do well to try Bonney Beach, Beauty Point, Garden Island, George Town Pier and the Break water at the Pilot Station.Flounders are occasionally taken on rod and line by anglers using sandworms for whiting but most are speared using under water lights and single prong spears. I had given up on the Tamar river a while ago after Dad and I went for a trip and every method of fishing only caught us parrot fish. The Tamar River offers many opportunities for winter fishing.
The flathead have been taken mainly on soft plastic lures but some anglers have had success bait fishing with squid bait.
The fishing has been picking up week by week with the main species anglers targeting are southern calamari and Australian salmon. The Port of Launceston Authority put out a very good Tamar River Map. They are a mid water species with small mouths. All will take a small red worm fly or a bread fly. A dark night with low tide after 11 o'clock is best for floundering. During the summer months the Tamar also boasts small populations of Snapper, Kingfish, Bream and Snotty Trevally.
