Where else in the world would you want to be right now other than in the middle of nowhere surrounded by big mountains painted in brilliant reds and oranges, being accompanied by nothing other than a few fishermen escaping this zombie plague chasing the world’s largest cutthroat trout ?With the lack of chaos and the abundance of trout that question is easily answered by all of us out here in the Nevada desert. As the fish are staging for spawn the are frequenting the shallows more often. Even though it’s cold it’s still very much worth it to make a trip out to the lake. Low cloud cover, dark skies, large waves and weather equal game time! It doesn’t hurt to leave the crowds and find new areas. As the air and water temperatures begin to warm will start to see fish cruising both feeding and non feeding post spawn fish. With so many fish in the lake this year many other spots that aren’t the normal popular areas are producing fish. Stripping bait fish/tui chub patterns paired with a boobie and beetle is always a solid go to. All these fish were caught on variations of midges under an indicator. Play around with depths and you might be pleasantly surprised. Beautiful reds, oranges and golds can be seen on these fish. Midges and nymphs in black, red, or wine as usual have been doing great and catching big fish. Under the bobber we are fishing midges for the most part with the occasional leech grab. These two anglers caught 12 fish over ten pounds along with 50 plus other fish in the 2-8 pound range. We are seeing significantly higher number days through December this year than we did last season around this time.
