Following the murder of George Floyd and the global protests and violence that followed, there is more interest in African American art and culture, and more compassion. Nicole Beharie shines as an African American mother who wants her teenage duaghter ("Chikaeze") to win the Miss Juneteenth pageant and take advantage of the opportunities she was not able to seize in her own life. Again, no connection. Through an Oscar worthy performance by Nicole Beharie who plays Turquoise, the audience is gifted something priceless; the story of a true, multidimensional, authentic, living , breathing African American mother. ‘Miss Juneteenth’: Film Review Channing Godfrey Peoples' first feature is a flavorful if sometimes too-laid-back slice of African America life in small-town Texas. Miss Juneteenth is a beautifully written and directed character study-an intimate, emotional exploration of the enduring and endearing resilience of the Black woman-as told through the seemingly insurmountable challenges that typify the day-to-day life experiences of Turquoise Jones (Nicole Beharie).
