(Route 9 Library and Innovation Center) Book club is next week.I read this book for the library family book club for the library where I work. As always, I wonder how this actually compares to the adult edition but I don't think I have enough time to read that one.The writing was not great. Chasing Space: An Astronaut's Story of Grit, Grace, and Second Chances They're into fantasy, ditto. In Chasing Space, Leland Melvin, the former NASA astronaut, shares this remarkable trajectory of his life. did not take up so much space in the book. This edition has been written in such a manner that younger readers from ages 10 and up can easily learn about the life of this astronaut, educator, speaker, and television host who can also claim the title as the only person to have been both drafted into the NFL and to have flown in space for NASA. I found my mind wandering at times (perhaps the fault is mine, as I was traveling while reading this?) I wanted to read more about his training as an astronaut and stories about his time at NASA. There is a good mixture of sports and science for kids interested in those topics.
As a young man, Melvin had received a scholarship to play NCAA football while majoring in science at the University of Richmond. A quickly-paced memoir of an exceptional outlier with the unique ability to compartmentalize, set goals and rally people to help him achieve them. We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others. These students aren't interested in how to get out of a gang. I'd like to compare it to the adult version writing styleAs an adult reader, I think I would have prefered the original book, but I think this is a great fit for lots of our middle and high school readers. It was inspiring to read about a man who overcame so many obstacles to be able to follow his dreams.
There are also some great life lessons. He seems like a wonderful friend and colleague.
This book caught my eye, because my nephew is enthralled with football and space.
It also offers a good look at astronaut training and the inner workings of the astronaut corp and its operations.
And this book is as solid as he is. His life was full of hardships and successes which make this a stunningly impactful biography. Hidden Figures Young Readers' Edition
Spaceman: An Astronaut's Unlikely Journey to Unlock the Secrets of the Universe
Your recently viewed items and featured recommendations The first half I enjoyed much more than the second half, because it focused on all his challenges and "failings" he had to overcome. I enjoyed reading Leland’s story.
I appreciated his never give up attitude and found his information about the rigorous astronaut training fascinating.Being an athlete and a space nerd, I thoroughly enjoyed this book!
Leland Melvin's life story is undoubtedly a good one, but the book sometimes wandered off on tangents or focused a bit too much on lists of names, places, & events.
Mills, Hazelwood East High School, St. Louis I highly recommend this title for both school and public libraries. If you are a parent or educator looking for inspiration how to motivate teens or young adults in STEM I recommend this book. His experiences in space will intrigue readers, as will the details of his pre-NASA life.
A particularly exciting component of the book was the author's ability to describe the setting of the story and I recommend this book to people that like motivational memoir novels. There are also some great life lessons. Young athletes will especially appreciate the discussion of how a sports team can act as an extended family, and Melvin's account of the difficulties he encountered as an African American man in an often predominantly white setting will resonate with teens. Though his path to the heavens was riddled with setbacks and injury, Leland persevered to reach the stars. Melvin has published two books; Chasing Space: An As… All the facts are there, but none of the story.
I found the book was great, but not as awesome as I was thinking it was going to be for some reason.
