He was descended from Snorri Sturleson, who wrote many sagas, but he was also the illegitimate son of a Scottish/Australian father who abandoned his mother in Copenhagen. Some of it is revealed in her own narrative. The depressing true story is sustained by Hannah Kent's flowing prose and beautiful descriptions. is based on actual historical events. While it is a novel, the author's prodigious research gives the story authenticity. Haldor Laxness, Iceland's Nobel prize winning author, has written many epic novels about his country that have been on my to-read list for over a decade. Based on the true story of the last woman to be publicly executed in Iceland, Burial Rites tells the story of Agnes Magnusdottir, a servant who is sentenced to death for the murder of two men, one of whom was her employer and lover.
This novel is a debut and the lady who wrote it is a) younger than me, and b) under 30. Burial Rites by Hannah Kent. The only problem I had with the novel was with Icelandic names! Hence, overall a 4. Book Reviews. These papers were written primarily by students and provide critical analysis of Burial Rites by Hannah Kent. We follow Agnes through this time, as she is awaiting her execution living with a family on a remote farm in the northern part of the country. But before I got to Laxness, a friend's recommendation took me to Hannah Kent's novel. Disabling it will result in some disabled or missing features.

Fire and Ice. This is her first novel, written towards completing a PhD at Flinders University. So massive props to Hannah Kent. Hopefully the reader won't miss the richness of the plot as Agnes reveals some of the worst and best moments of her young life -- to the eventual murder in which she was involved. Beautifully written, the story travels at a steady pace throughout the book, and I came to understand the characters more as Agnes recounted her view of the events that had transpired. Burial Rites by Hannah Kent. The story is simple and stark, and Hannah Kent's protagonist, Agnes, is delightfully human. This book touched me deeply. But that's not a spoiler because this extraordinary tale by Hannah Kent (published in 2010 when she was only 25 years old!) In Book Reviews . Your recently viewed items and featured recommendations
The writing is 5-star, the story itself (despite the brilliant, painstaking research) rates a 3. An interesting tale woven around a true story about a woman sentenced for execution for murder set in Iceland in the 1800s. My husband commented that character development may or may not be important to a novel -- but, identifying with characters certainly is important -- and, I definitely identified with many of the individuals even though the story takes place in the early 1800s.
